Oak Curtain Crust - Hymenochaete rubiginosa

#1

Post by Wood Wanderer » January 7th, 2019, 3:45 pm

Very little about on my latest walk, presume the recent cold spell is the culprit.

Still I did find a log covered in Oak Curtain Crust - Hymenochaete rubiginosa, meant to be fairly common but I rarely encounter it myself.

nice one Wood Wanderer :)
its one i have only ever found twice, and both times they were old and blackened specimens, an not in great condition like yours,
and on both occasions, it was on old and well rotten Oak logs, which yours appears to be on too,
it may be said to be common, but with the number of oaks we have round here in Sherwood and Clumber etc, with a plentiful supply of old dead and rotten wood, it does not turn up to often :(

yes, a great find,
and twice is two more of them than i've ever found :(
i wonder if i have overlooked them before, thinking they were just some old turkeytails
i shall be looking a little closer at any dark looking ones in the futures :)

not one i have seen yet either, although its listed in my book as being common
perhaps i am not looking in all the right places, maybe i am like forager and may have seen some but mistook it for old turkey tails :D
but there again, there is not much of anything about at the moment , except for the Hairy Curtain Crust that seems to be everywhere

Thanks all for your comments, have just checked my records and this is only the third time I have found this in 10 years (and one of those is the same oak log in 2016)

On that basis alone I reckon the "books" need a rewrite as it is hardly common ..
