Jelly Brain

Post by Moriati » February 4th, 2019, 12:33 am

Found this jelly brain today which I beleive it to be Tremella mesenterica but I am not sure if it is yellow or orange. Interestinly, I found it resting on the ground amoungst the leaf litter and presume it may have been dislodged from the tree above.

definitely a Tremella species, and most probably mesenterica too,
but as Tremalla aurantia looks almost identical to mesenterica, its hard to say, especially as it appears to have fallen from the tree, making it hard to say which other fungi it was parasitic upon,

Tremella mesenterica is parasitic on Peniphora species,
white Tremella aurantia is parasitc on Hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum)
and to make it even more difficult, neither of the two host fungi are sometimes not visible, as the tremella feeds from the hidden mycelium hidden in the tree branch !
